The first time we meet with a new client to discuss their case we always discuss their insurance coverage. Our clients typically tell us they have “full coverage.” We have heard it so many times before and often times they don’t have full coverage at all.
Our idea, as attorney’s, and an insurance carrier’s idea of full coverage are completely different. Full coverage to insurance agents is what is required by. Most people are told they have full coverage when really, they have property damage coverage and personal injury protection coverage. That isn’t full coverage, that is simply the minimum insurance coverage required by law. The maximum would really be every insurance coverage offered by the insurance company, and that would be excessive. Insurance policies must be selected for each individual person based on their needs.
What we really think of as full coverage is the coverage that’s going to protect our client and put our client in the best position to react if they’re involved in some kind of an accident. The insurance agents are supposed to sit down with people and go over their options and ask the right questions to determine exactly what coverage each person needs and can afford. We find all too often that insurance agents either don’t have the time or they don’t know how to do this. We frequently have people come into our office who think they have full coverage but they don’t even have the coverage they need.
