As personal injury attorneys we represent a lot of clients that were involved in car accidents. We have seen all different types of insurance policies and know all of the different types of coverages to look for and the terminology can be a bit overwhelming. One term that we think every driver should know about is something called umbrella coverage.
Umbrella coverage is the cadillac of car insurance. It is typically offered to people who have a lot of money and assets and have maxed out the rest of the insurance coverage. People with a lot to lose get this coverage so they don’t have to worry about being sued for any personal assets because umbrella coverage will grant them a huge policy limit that will cover any damages or injuries they could possibly cause.
If you are involved in an accident that you didn’t cause you may want to see if the at-fault driver has umbrella coverage. If you are someone with a considerable amount of wealth then you may want to consider getting umbrella coverage to protect yourself and any other driver on your policy.
One thing that you must remember to do, even if you get umbrella coverage, is to make sure you have uninsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage is not automatically included with umbrella coverage so you want to make sure you add that as well.
